Taiwanese business meetings are formal, relationship-oriented, and influenced by Confucian values, emphasizing respect for hierarchy, harmony, and preparation. Building trust and long-term relationships is essential before concluding agreements.
- Meetings should be scheduled well in advance and confirmed shortly before. Prepare detailed agendas and written materials, preferably bilingual (Chinese/English), and research participants’ titles and seniority.
- Arrive on time or slightly early, as punctuality is seen as a sign of professionalism and respect. Greet with a light handshake and a slight nod; address counterparts by their titles and surnames.
- Meetings are generally formal and structured. Senior members usually speak first, and open disagreement is avoided in favor of indirect communication. Decisions may not be made immediately, as consensus and internal consultation are valued.
- Follow up with a polite email summarizing key points, decisions, and next steps. Patience is important, as final decisions may require additional internal discussions and follow-up meetings.
